(The Omaha Daily Record) Creighton Business Law students study contracts, corporate finance, mortgages and insurance among other topics, but a conversation between real estate attorney Jerry Slusky and Dean Paul McGreal brought the realization that the many opportunities for commercial real estate lawyers were rarely addressed in law school. The solution? A one-hour class offered an overview of the commercial real estate development process, presented by three experienced area lawyers.
The law school’s large conference room was filled to capacity as students listened to real-life problems and solutions to a number of recent Omaha real estate developments. For one, they learned about the power of the “spite strip” – when a small, central piece of land is retained in sell-off, so that the pieces cannot be put back together again without the consent of the owner of that strip. Case in point: the 72nd Street Walmart land parcel. It is hoped that the class’s success will lead to more exposure to the subject in the future.
Students were also invited to attend the CRE Summit on Friday, April 8, at the reduced rate of $25. The annual event brings together more than 700 members of the area’s real estate community to learn the latest happenings in Omaha (http://www.attendcresummit.com).
Slusky emphasized that there are many opportunities in the broad field of commercial real estate for new lawyers.
